Potty Training Tips for Puppies and Kittens

Potty training a new puppy or kitten is mostly about consistency and management rather than any single trick — setting up an environment that makes success easy, and being patient while the habit forms.

For puppies: routine is everything

Young puppies have limited bladder control, and taking them out on a predictable schedule — after waking up, after eating, after play, and every couple of hours in between — prevents most accidents before they happen. Praise or a small reward immediately after they go in the right spot reinforces the behavior far more effectively than any correction after an accident.

Using training pads indoors

For puppies who aren't fully outdoor-trained yet, or for owners who need an indoor option (apartments, bad weather, young puppies not yet vaccinated for outdoor walks), training pads give a designated indoor spot. Our Dog & Cat Training Pads, 50-Pack (24" x 18") use a fast-absorbing multi-layer core with a waterproof, leak-proof bottom layer to protect floors — useful not just for young puppies and kittens but also for senior pets who may need extra support.

For kittens: the litter box usually does most of the work

Kittens generally take to a litter box quickly since digging and burying is instinctive behavior. The main things that trip up the process are box placement (too far from where the kitten spends time, or too close to food/water) and box type (too tall for a small kitten to climb into comfortably). Starting with a lower-sided or easily accessible box and moving to something like our kitten-appropriate setup as they grow tends to work better than starting with an adult-sized enclosed box.

Managing accidents without derailing progress

Punishment after the fact doesn't help — puppies and kittens don't connect a correction minutes later to the accident itself, so it just creates confusion or anxiety without improving the behavior. Clean accidents thoroughly (residual odor can attract repeat visits to the same spot) and refocus on the routine going forward.

When extra protection helps

During the training window, or for female dogs during heat cycles, disposable protection can reduce stress around accidents while the habit is still forming. Our Disposable Female Dog Diapers use a soft, skin-friendly fabric with effective leak protection, available in sizes XS–L.

What to expect timeline-wise

Most puppies show real progress within a few weeks of consistent routine, though full reliability can take a few months. Kittens with a properly placed, appropriately sized litter box often need very little active training at all. In both cases, consistency from you matters more than the specific products used — the right setup just makes that consistency easier to maintain.
