Getting Your Pet Comfortable Wearing Costumes and Clothes

Santa Claus pet costume for dogs and cats

The stiff-legged, frozen walk many pets do the first time they wear clothing isn't stubbornness — it's a response to an unfamiliar sensation of restricted movement and fabric touching areas that are rarely touched otherwise.

Start before the occasion, not on the day

Introducing a costume for the first time right before a holiday photo or event sets up a stressful first impression. Instead, introduce any new garment 1-2 weeks ahead, in short, low-pressure sessions at home.

A simple desensitization approach

  • Let your pet sniff and investigate the garment fully before it goes on
  • Put it on for 30-60 seconds with treats and praise, then remove it — end on a positive note before any discomfort sets in
  • Gradually extend the time over several sessions, always removing it while your pet is still calm rather than waiting for them to show signs of wanting it off
  • Add a short walk or play session once the garment itself is no longer novel — movement while dressed is a separate skill from just tolerating the fabric

Signs you're moving too fast

Freezing in place, excessive scratching at the garment, or trying to walk backward out of it are signs to shorten the session, not push through it — a bad first experience makes every future attempt harder.

Our Santa Claus Pet Costume, Blue Duck Print Button-Up Shirt, and Basketball Jersey Dog Vest all use easy on/off closures specifically to make this kind of gradual introduction simpler.
