Of the many supplements marketed for dogs, omega-3 fish oil has some of the strongest evidence behind it — but the timeline and the visible results are often misunderstood.
What omega-3s actually do
EPA and DHA, the two omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, support the skin's lipid barrier, which is what keeps moisture in and irritants out. A dog with a compromised skin barrier — from allergies, dry winter air, or frequent bathing — tends to have a duller, flakier coat and can become itchier over time.
What to realistically expect
- Weeks 1-3: little to no visible change — the coat's existing hair isn't affected retroactively
- Weeks 4-8: new hair growth starts to reflect the improved skin condition; texture often improves before shine does
- 2-3 months: a fuller coat cycle has typically completed, and shine and softness are usually most noticeable at this point
Dosing matters more than brand
Fish oil is fat-soluble and easy to over- or under-dose relative to body weight. Chewable tablets dosed by weight range are easier to get right consistently than liquid oil measured by eye, and consistency day-to-day matters more than the exact source of the omega-3s.
Our Dog Fish Oil Chewable Tablets are dosed per tablet rather than measured by volume, which makes the daily amount easy to keep consistent.
